[Entrevista] Epica: Simone Simons em entrevista exclusiva ao Acesso Music

O Epica é um grupo que atingiu status de grande banda aqui no Brasil, assim como em outros territórios. Em meio a turnê de divulgação de seu mais recente álbum, The Holographic Principle, a vocalista Simone Simons nos ligou para falar sobre a banda e também sobre seus hobbies e gostos pessoais.

A primeira pergunta é sobre o Epic Metal Fest, festival que a banda fez no Brasil no ano passado. Foi uma experiência positiva para a banda? Podemos esperar novas edições no Brasil?
Talvez, um dia, mas nós temos a ideia de continuar fazendo o festival na Holanda e também, a cada ano, em um novo país. O Brasil foi a primeira edição internacional do Epic Metal Fest e nós nos divertimos muito, foi um sucesso, mas na próxima vez faremos em um país diferente. Não porque não gostamos do Brasil, apenas porque queremos mudar sempre. Talvez o Brasil seja a quarta ou quinta edição novamente, não sabemos. Mas isso são coisas que sobre as quais nossa produção está pensando e, até onde eu sei, não estamos planejando outro Epic Metal Fest no Brasil num futuro próximo.

Tudo bem, mas podemos esperar o Epica em turnê pelo Brasil de novo, promovendo o novo álbum?
Sim, é claro! Nós amamos o Brasil.

Ótimo! Agora, quero falar com você sobre algo diferente. Você postou uma foto no Instagram com a Miss Fame, de RuPaul’s Drag Race. Você gosta deste programa? Conte-nos um pouco mais sobre isso.
Eu nunca assisti a esse programa. Eu sei que é algo muito grandioso nos Estados Unidos, e eu fui convidada a estar lá por conta do meu blog, SmoonStyle. Miss Fame é um dos rostos da L’oreal e da maquiagem, então ela também estava lá. Nós conversamos um pouco e tiramos uma foto, foi muito legal. E ela também é muito bonita, além de ser ótima com maquiagem.

Bem, além da banda, você tem o seu blog, no qual você fala sobre beleza e assuntos nessa linha. Se você não fosse vocalista de uma banda de Heavy Metal, você gostaria de trabalhar com dicas de beleza, roupas, maquiagem e coisas assim?
Sim, e também é parte do Epica, sabe? Tenho de fazer minha própria maquiagem para sessões de fotos, shows e vídeos. E eu adoro, é a parte divertida de ser uma cantora para mim: posso usar uma maquiagem mais extrema, é realmente divertido. Eu sempre gostei de ser criativa com maquiagem, com criação de coisas – pinturas, esculturas ou mesmo cozinhando e fotografando. Adoro essas coisas bem criativas.

E você sente que os fãs do Epica são as pessoas que geralmente leem seu blog ou você acredita que são públicos diferentes, os fãs só escutam as músicas e os leitores do blog são um público completamente diferente?
É uma mistura. Nós temos muitos fãs do Epica, que também são na verdade a razão de eu ter começado o blog, há sete anos. Muitas pessoas, na maioria do sexo feminino, me perguntavam “Onde você conseguiu toda essa maquiagem? E seu vestido do show? E seus sapatos? E o que você faz com seu cabelo?”. Naquela época eu já amava fotografia, e minha paixão por cozinhar aumentou muito durante os anos, então comecei o SmoonStyle. Ele se tornou um blog muito popular e eu adoro isso; também é um hobby. E é, de certa forma, ligado ao Epica, sempre que estou viajando, eu tiro fotos… É um jeito ótimo de me comunicar e combinar todos os meus hobbies, que é o que acontece no meu blog.

Bem, você gosta de cantores e de música pop, certo?
Eu gosto de muitos cantores diferentes, não particularmente do pop, mas se eu ouvir e me conectar com a música, não importa o estilo musical, eu me apaixono pela melodia e pela voz. Mas se eu tivesse que escolher um cantor pop, provavelmente seria a Adele.

Seu estilo de cantar tem inspiração na Tarja, ex-Nightwish. Por que vocês duas nunca gravaram uma música juntas até agora?
Eu não sei! Talvez aconteça um dia. Seria legal. (risos)

É, vocês podem convidá-la, já que ela está em carreira solo…
Nós a convidamos uma vez, eu acho que para um show especial do Epica, mas ela não pode comparecer. Então, nós conversamos sobre essa possibilidade há alguns anos, e queríamos que acontecesse, mas ela não conseguiu.

Bem, voltando ao assunto do Epica, qual sua faixa favorite do último álbum, The Holographic Principle, e por quê?
Seria a faixa título, eu acho, The Holographic Principle, porque é um resumo muito bonito de todo o álbum e soa como o Epica. Eu amo o coral, a melancolia da música, é como uma bela jornada. O coral me dá arrepios, e eu adoro como a música se desenvolve… Eu realmente gosto muito. Universal Death Squad e Divide And Conquer também são outras duas favoritas minhas.

Você postou no seu ‘Instagram Stories’ algo sobre vocais demo. Estão relacionados a um novo álbum do Epica ou não?
É outro projeto em que estamos trabalhando. Não é para um álbum do Epica… É um projeto secreto, é só o que vou dizer.

E existem planos para um novo álbum, no próximo ano ou futuramente?
Não estamos pensando em um novo álbum ainda, porque estamos promovendo The Holographic Principle. Estamos no meio de uma turnê, mas é algo a que provavelmente iremos chegar em algum momento.

O Epica ainda não lançou um álbum ao vivo regular, apenas como banda – seis membros, sem orquestra. Existem planos para gravar algo assim num futuro próximo?
Não, nenhum plano concreto ainda, mas temos o The Classical Conspiracy e o DVD Retrospect, então apenas esses projetos enormes, chega a ser um pouco injusto. Também estamos concorrendo num concurso para gravar uma música com a Dutch Ballet Orchestra e, se ganharmos, poderemos gravar uma música com uma orquestra muito famosa.

Que banda ou artista você acredita que faria um bom cover de uma música do Epica?
Oh… É uma boa pergunta. Ninguém nunca me perguntou isso! (risos) Hmm… Não tenho ideia, não consigo responder.

Ok, e, por outro lado, de qual banda ou artista você gostaria de fazer um cover?
Hmm. Eu realmente adoro o Opeth, gosto do Rammstein, Lacuna Coil… Vamos sair em turnê com o Lacuna, o que é realmente ótimo. Também com a Anneke [van Giersbergen], sempre a admirei muito, vamos sair em turnê juntas pela Europa, então são duas turnês muito legais que estão por vir. Talvez cantemos juntas, nunca se sabe!

Clovis: The first question is about Epic Metal Fest, the festival the band did in Brazil last year. Was it a positive experience for the band, overall? Can we expect new editions here in Brazil?
Simone: Maybe, one day, but we kind of have the idea of keeping on doing it on the Netherlands and also each year within a new country. So, Brazil was the first international edition of Epic Metal Fest and we had a good time, it was a success, but we are probably going to do it probably, next time, in a different country ­ – not because we don’t like Brazil, just because we want to switch it up. Maybe Brazil will be the fourth or the fifth one again, we don’t know, but those are plans our management is working on and, as far as I know, we are not planning to do an Epic Metal Fest in Brazil in the near future.

All right, but can we expect Epica touring again in Brazil, promoting the new album?
Yeah, of course! We love Brazil.

Great! Now, I want to talk with you about different stuff. You’ve posted a picture on Instagram with Miss Fame, from RuPaul’s Drag Race. Do you like that show? Can you tell us a little bit more about it.
I have never watched this show. I know it’s a big thing in America, and I was invited there for my blog, SmoonStyle. Miss Fame is one of the faces of L’oreal and make-up, so she was also there and we talked a bit, took a photo, and it was really nice. She is really beautiful as well, with really good make-up.

Well, besides the band, you have your blog, where you talk about beauty and stuff like that. If you were not the lead singer of a Heavy Metal band, would you like to work with beauty tips, clothes, make-up and things like that?
Yeah, and it’s also part of Epica, you know, I have to do my own make-up for photo shoots, concerts, videos… I enjoy it, it’s a fun part of being a singer for me, I can wear more extreme make-up. And it’s fun, I’ve always loved to be creative with make-up and creating stuff: painting, sculpting or even cooking and photography. I love all that stuff, very creative.

And do you feel that Epica fans are the people that mainly read your blog, or do you think those are different publics – the fans just listen to the music and the viewers of your blog are another completely different kind of people?
It’s a mixture. We have a lot of Epica fans, they are also the reason I’ve ever started the blog, seven years ago. Many people, mostly female fans, asked me like “Where did you get all this nice make-up? And your stage dress? And your shoes? And what do you do with your hair?”. By then I already loved photography, and my passion for cooking also developed over the years, so I started SmoonStyle. It has become quite a popular blog and I enjoy it, it’s also a hobby. And it’s kind of connected with Epica, whenever I’m travelling, I take photos… It’s a nice way to communicate and to combine all my hobbies into one, and that’s what happens in my blog.

All right. Well, you like pop music and pop singers, right?
I like many different singers, not particularly pop style, but I if I hear it and I connect with it, it doesn’t matter which style of music it is, I fall in love with the melody and with the voice. But if I would have to pick a pop singer, it would probably Adele.

Well, your style of singing is kind of inspired in Tarja, ex-Nightwish, why have you both never recorded a song together until now?
I don’t know! Maybe it will happen one day. It would be nice. (laughs)

Yeah, you can invite her now that she is with a solo career…
We did invite her once, I think, for a special Epica show, but she couldn’t make it. So, we did communicate about that possibility a couple of years ago, and we wanted it to happen with her, but she couldn’t make it.

Well, returning a little bit to Epica, what is your favorite track of the last album, The Holographic Principle, and why?
That would be the title track, I think, The Holographic Principle, because it is a beautiful summary of the entire album and it just sounds like Epica. I love the choir, the melancholy in the song and it’s just like a beautiful journey. The choirs give me goose bumps, I really like the way that the song goes down… I really like that song a lot. And Universal Death Squad, Divide And Conquer are also some of my favorites

You’ve posted on your Instagram Stories something about demo vocals. Is it related to a new Epica album or not?
It’s another project we are working on, it is not for an Epica CD, not a full-length CD… It’s a secret project, that’s all I’ll say.

And are there plans for a new album, next year or soon enough?
We’re not thinking about a new album just yet, because we are promoting The Holographic Principle. We’re in the middle of touring, and it’s something we’ll eventually get to, writing a new record.

And Epica hasn’t released a regular live album, as only a band – six members – without orchestra. Are there plans to record something like that in the near future?
No, not concrete plans yet, but we’ve done it with The Classical Conspiracy we had the DVD with Retrospect so, it’s only these huge projects, it’s something unfair. We are also taking part of a contest to record a song with Dutch Ballet Orchestra and if we win that we can do a song with a famous orchestra.

Which band or artist do you think would make a cool cover of an Epica song?
Oh… That’s a good question. No one has asked me that question before! (laughs) Hmm… I have no idea, I can’t give an answer to that question.

Ok, so going to the other side, which band or artist would you like to record a cover of?
Hmm. I really like Opeth, I like Rammstein, Lacuna Coil – we are going on tour with Lacuna, which is really awesome. Also with Anneke [van Giersbergen], I’ve always admired her, we are going to tour through Europe together so those are really two cool tours that are coming up. Maybe we will sing together, you never know!
